Students Cannot Sue Colleges for Releasing Private Student Records

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that students and their parents cannot sue colleges for violating laws that protect private student records.

The 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act has measures that prevent educational institutions from divulging confidential student information to an outside party without the written consent of the student.

However, in a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the law does not give students (or their parents) the right to sue colleges that violate the act and release confidential information without permission.
