how do you cheer your friend up when she or he is feeling depress?
take em drinking and book them with mad girls/guys..=P

I am a phenomenal woman.
They know that they can always count on me to talk to... and they know I give good feedback, so they always come talk to me...
But if that doesn't help, I act stupid and humor them up. They always end up laughing anyways...
But if that doesn't help either, I'd do what Queeny said. Take them drinking and just "happy the night away"
address the problem, do not pretend it is not there. Superficial jokes help rarely.
Real funny stories about whatever actually help me feel better as well.

i try to show them the bright side of things to make them realise they aren't as unfortunate as they think

Well going for a run is a good idea, people who are less physically active tend to be more prone to depression.
