since when were we ever promised intellectual freedom?
Anyway, ideally i don't think anything should be banned. But, it's become custom for institutions to make their own rules for the mere sake of security. I don't like book banning mainly because in our system and i'm guessing others, it only takes one single parent to get a book off the curriculum. Yeah, that's thousands of dollars wasted in curriculum writing gone down the drain all because of one upset parent. It's absurd. Parents shouldn't have that much power. It'd be different if schools were unable to accomodate for those who didn't wish to read the books, but most schools offer an alternative book to read instead. There's no reason why we should just take it away from everybody just because an overly protective parent doesn't want their kid to read it. The few ruining it for the masses.
But, there is a point to some of these things. As in religion and such, since the public schools are funded by the government, the government would be perceived as advocating a religion, and thus controversy entails of course. But for books with content that isn't appropriate, that's absurd. We need to get rid of all these censoring authorities hehe. Same reason why under god sholdn't be in the pledge, and why god shouldn't be on the money, it's blatant disregard for seperation of church and state. But in the issue of whether it's inappropriate...please, that's not an issue, it wastes money and infringes on rights (yes i realize you don't have full rights until you are 18, i was kind of dodging that hehe).
haha, i hate censorship. I think it's one of the biggest hypocrisy in america, and have no idea why it still exists in the macro forms it does today.
