banning bookz

many schools have banned several books such as Harry Potter, The Chocolate War, Origin of Species, Gone with the Wind, Fahrenheit 451, Slaughterhouse-Five and others. They claim them to be a work of evil. what is your view on this?

“Intellectual Freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored. Intellectual freedom encompasses the freedom to hold, receive and disseminate ideas.”

since when were we ever promised intellectual freedom?

Anyway, ideally i don't think anything should be banned. But, it's become custom for institutions to make their own rules for the mere sake of security. I don't like book banning mainly because in our system and i'm guessing others, it only takes one single parent to get a book off the curriculum. Yeah, that's thousands of dollars wasted in curriculum writing gone down the drain all because of one upset parent. It's absurd. Parents shouldn't have that much power. It'd be different if schools were unable to accomodate for those who didn't wish to read the books, but most schools offer an alternative book to read instead. There's no reason why we should just take it away from everybody just because an overly protective parent doesn't want their kid to read it. The few ruining it for the masses.

But, there is a point to some of these things. As in religion and such, since the public schools are funded by the government, the government would be perceived as advocating a religion, and thus controversy entails of course. But for books with content that isn't appropriate, that's absurd. We need to get rid of all these censoring authorities hehe. Same reason why under god sholdn't be in the pledge, and why god shouldn't be on the money, it's blatant disregard for seperation of church and state. But in the issue of whether it's inappropriate...please, that's not an issue, it wastes money and infringes on rights (yes i realize you don't have full rights until you are 18, i was kind of dodging that hehe).

haha, i hate censorship. I think it's one of the biggest hypocrisy in america, and have no idea why it still exists in the macro forms it does today.

Schools that ban books take them out of the curriculum or something to that extent. People can still read the books when they're at home. So the freedom to hold, receive and disseminate ideas isn't prohibited, they just want you to do it on your own time.

slaughterhouse 5 is a great book...in fact many philosophy classes use it.
Then again, the religious kiddies in the Education System probably dislike it because it provides another philosophy that might "corrupt" the minds of believers.

well it sucks books are taken out but then they some just stir up too much controversy or not enough time for it etc. but then its not like they can't read those books at home or check them out. although those books may give ideas of liberation ppl kinda go crazy with it.

there is really no problem with controversy. Controversy and conflict means that there is an underlying problem within our society, one that needs to be addressed- not hidden or ignored.

We must face our differences if we are to emerge as a stronger and more intelligent society.
