good movies

these are artsy/hot-house cinema:

Ma Vie en Rose[My Life in Pink]

A little boy has a little problem. He is under the misconception that he is a girl in a boy's body. His name is Ludovic. His family just moved into a house where the neighbors happen to be his father's boss. He falls in love with the boy next door, and when everyone finds out all hell breaks loose. He is hated by the neighborhood for being "bent" and made miserable by his family that doesn't understand and wants to change him.
The movie is very good and tells how prejudice turns people ugly and makes everyone miserable.

After Life (dir. Kore-eda Hirokazu)

The film is based on the premise that after you die, you must choose one memory to live throughout eternity. The movie follows the memories and revelations of many post-war Japanese struggling to find one moment in their life that they were most happy/satisfied. The main character is Mochizuki (played by Arata), a spiritual aid that helps people find their most treasured memory when he, himself, has not yet come to terms with his own life.
It is a beautifully crafted film that explores "what is the true meaning of living?"

Kids Return (dir. Takeshi Kitano)

Two high-school friends, Shinji and Masaru, run into each other after a long time of being apart. It is a very fond meeting that leads to the real story to be told in the film. They remember their highschool days, how they rose and inevitably fell. It touches up on the opressive nature of school, society, and life in general. Shinji (played by Ando Masanobu) follows Masaru around for a very long time being the more submissive of the two. And then, it becomes surprisingly apparent after a while that he is actually the stronger person. In the end, though, he never realizes this and stays a follower. This type of behavior ultimately leads him in a very swift downward fall.
I really like this movie even though it's bittersweet. The friendship is very nicely expressed.

there's more movies that I could reccomend...but I'll see what you think of these first
