i think understanding is only one way of obtaining peace. I agree it's very likely that peace can be reached through violence as well, why not? is the question.
And, in regards to the initial posed question...i think it's stupid. War doesn't become more acceptable. The nuclear arms race is proof of that. It's become all the more taboo, and frowned upon. Think about it, that's why conventional war is the only "acceptable" form of war. As in, a compromise of war methodology. The general tenet is that war shouldn't involve higher forms of technology because they are so dangerous, nuclear, bio, radiological, chemical, whatever. It's not making it more acceptable, if it was we'd be fighting with those, (i know that's not the only reason, second strikes is a reason as is many others, no need to point out the flaws in my logif.
