It all counts on both partners, as it takes two to make a relationship. IMO, both partners must be willing to make the relationship work, put in time for each other, try their best to visit each other, both must really love each other, etc. Oh, yeah, and both must be mature enough to deal with such a difficult situation. Hey, it worked for my friend's uncle, who after a couple of years of a long-distance relationship, he finally got married to the girl.
For me, long-distance didn't work, because I have a tendency to idealize about the person than actually treat them like they really are a person, and end up liking the ideal and not them. Let's leave it at that, you KNOW what problems that can cause. Oh, but the relationship still worked for about 9 months because I was so obsessed about her (not love, dude, obsessed, that's exactly what I was talking about with liking the ideal and not the person). I rarely got to visit her anyway.
