the sum of all forces will always equal mass * acceleration. It's not saying that mass * acceleration is a sum. It's saying that if you have forces, F1, F2 etc., then:
F1 + F2 = mass *acceleration
it's like saying, this is a terrible example i apologize but it works,
3 + 5 = 2 * 4
8 = 2 * 4
